New Book Club!
You like non-fiction? Neuroscience? Getting somewhat meta? Cool. This is the book club for you.
Welcome!
I’m Sarah, I’m a bit of a mixed bag - I love research, nonfiction, Legos, stand up comedy, being a lesbian, and backing into parking spaces. This is my book club!
Here’s an outline of what’s coming up.
Book: Reading In the Brain: The New Science of How We Read - Stanislas Dehaene
About the Book:
The act of reading is so easily taken for granted that we forget what an astounding feat it is. How can a few black marks on white paper evoke an entire universe of meanings? It’s even more amazing when we consider that we read using a primate brain that evolved to serve an entirely different purpose. In this riveting investigation, Stanislas Dehaene explores every aspect of this human invention, from its origins to its neural underpinnings. A world authority on the subject, Dehaene reveals the hidden logic of spelling, describes pioneering research on how we process languages, and takes us into a new appreciation of the brain and its wondrous capacity to adapt.
Official Book Club Starting Date(s):
Sunday, February 15 @ 10 AM PST - 12:30 PM PST
Monday, February 16 @ 6 PM PST - 8:30 PM PST
You, maybe: why are there two start dates?
Me: Because I want to give people options as PST is a fiddly mistress - and no, you do not have to attend both. The meetings will also be recorded if you can’t make it.
Annotation Sessions:
When it comes to reading I’m a huge annotator so 30 minutes after each book club meeting I offer a one hour “annotation session” (Patreon info listed below) where I show everyone (who paid for this tier) how I annotate as well as spend additional time going over related research from the session.
I will be including the schedule for annotation sessions after the normal book club schedule (below) however, they are apart of a different “tier” from the general book club.

Are we allowed to join if we weren’t in the book club from the beginning? i’m shy 🥹
Hi! I'm new to book clubs and will be joining late, so I have a question. Do we read the listed chapters together, or is the expectation to have read the listed chapters by the time we all join together?
